Before 1949, Chinese athletes attended three Olympic Games altogether, but every time came back with failure. They did not get even one medal. A foreign newspaper once put out a cartoon: Under the Olympic five-ringed flag, a group of thin and emaciated Chinese people, wearing mandarin robes and jackets, carry a huge duck egg—zero. The title of this cartoon is “Sick Man of East Asia.” This is a humiliation and satire of the Chinese athletes but also indicates that the disaster-ridden old China has no status in the world.22
